Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Stone Throwing Incidents.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

219 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to incidents of stone throwing at trains in the Dublin area and particularly on the Maynooth line; if he has discussed the matter with the Garda authorities; and the policy, if any, being followed by his Department in relation to such matters. [15373/97]

: I am informed by the Garda authorities that this problem is receiving ongoing attention. Regular meetings are held between the Garda and Iarnród Éireann to review incidences of stone throwing and to decide on appropriate action. Since 1 January 1997, there have been, on average, one or two such attacks each month. The Garda has regular railway protection patrols and a number of arrests have been made. As part of the Garda school programme, the Garda is raising the issue in local schools in order to highlight the dangers of this activity.
