92 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Defence the progress, if any, which has been made in establishing the headquarters of the amalgamated 30 and 3 infantry battalions in James Stephens Barracks in Kilkenny; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15300/97]
Preparations for the amalgamation of the 3rd and 30th Infantry Battalions are progressing satisfactorily. A board of military officers has completed the detailed staffwork on all aspects of the amalgamation, including the Kilkenny based headquarters.
The timetable for reorganisation of headquarters, formations and units of the Defence Forces envisages the amalgamation of the 3rd and 30th Infantry Battalions being implemented on 1 February 1998. The headquarters and other elements of the amalgamated battalion will also be established on that date.
