Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Urban Transport.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

87 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the proposals, if any, she has to regenerate public transport in Dublin and Cork. [16452/97]

The strategy recommended in the final report of the Dublin Transportation Initiative (DTI) provides the general policy framework for the development of the transport system in the greater Dublin area. I am committed to ensuring, subject to appropriate evaluation and approval procedures, that this strategy is implemented in respect of public transport.

The key elements include a network of light rail lines and of quality bus corridors; extension and upgrading of rail services, specifically DART and the Maynooth rail service; park and ride facilities, and integrated ticketing.

In general CIE is responsible for the planning and implementation of these projects in conjunction, where appropriate, with other relevant agencies including local authorities and the Dublin Transportation Office. Important progress has already been made by CIE and the other agencies and I aim to ensure that this is continued.

CIE is also responsible for the planning and provision of public transport services in the Cork area in conjunction with the Cork local authorities where appropriate. I have asked that an assessment of the public transport situation in Cork be prepared for my consideration.
