Vol. 481 No. 5

Written Answers - Examination Appeals.

John Perry

Ceist:

132 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will immediately review the decision made by his Department in relation to the case of a person (details supplied) in County Sligo. [16541/97]

The person referred to by the Deputy was a candidate at this year's leaving certificate examination and he subsequently sought a recheck of his work in English. The remarking and checking was carried out by an experienced examiner in accordance with the standard appeal procedures. The appeal examiner considered that the grade awarded by the original examiner, in accordance with the marking scheme, gave the candidate full credit for all work done. There is no provision for any further re-marking of a candidate's work once the appeal process has concluded.

In 1997, for the first time, it is open to candidates to apply to an examination commissioner to confirm that all appeal processes were carried out in respect of any subject on which they sought a review. Examination commissioners are independent of my Department. Commissioners have the power to request all documentation in relation to an appeal so as to establish that all appeal procedures were properly carried out. Full details of the procedure for applying to an examination commissioner were provided to candidates on 1 October last.
