23 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when it is planned to publish the Social Welfare Bill in view of the fact that the budget is to be on 3 December 1997; if any increases will be applied from 1 January 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. It is not possible to indicate when the Social Welfare Bill, 1998 will be published. The date of publication will depend on a number of factors including the extent and range of measures contained in the budget, affecting my Department, which require legislation; the implementation dates for such measures, and the level of consultation required with other Government Departments, agencies or interested groups in the formulation of the provisions of the Bill. I will endeavour to have this Bill published at earliest possible date.
