The details of the staffing levels sought are shown in a table which I am circulating in the Official Report. The table shows the staffing levels for each of the years as at 1 January, with the exception of 1987, for which the available figures as at 1 April of that year are shown. In addition, it also shows the staffing level at 1 October 1997.
In summary, there were 4,199 staff serving at 1 October 1997, of which over 800 are located in four decentralised ofices in Sligo, Letterkenny, Longford and Waterford and about 1,440 are based in local offices throughout the country.
The overall staffing levels in the Department are reviewed, from time to time, as the need arises to ensure that the work requirements of the organisation are met as effectively and efficiently as possible, having regard to Government policy on public sector numbers.
