Ceist:

83 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Health and Children the arrangements for the long-term care of chronically ill young patients in the Southern Health Board area; the number of such patients currently being catered for; the number of such patients on waiting lists; the plans, if any, he has to put funding in place to help these people and their families particularly a person (details supplied) in the South Infirmary/Victoria Hospital, Cork who has suffered a stroke and has nowhere to go but needs long-term nursing care. The Southern Health Board has a dedicated unit for the young chronic sick based in St. Finbarr's Hospital which has 24 beds. There are also 59 chronic sick patients accommodated in the community hospitals throughout the board's area. Currently, there are 11 patients on the waiting list for this type of accommodation. I am not yet in a position to comment on the level of funding which will be available for any particular service in 1998.
