Written Answers - Music Education.
Music education is an integral part of the primary schools curriculum. The existing music programme is being revised as part of the overall review of the primary curriculum by the NCCA. Music education in the revised curriculum will be a significant part of a wider and more firmlybased arts education programme.
The NCCA is finalising the review of all curricular areas at primary level. Preparations are also in train within my Department for the implementation of the revised curriculum.
At post-primary level, a new leaving certificate music syllabus was introduced this September. The first examination of this new syllabus will take place in 1999.
To assist in the implementation of this new syllabus, my Department is providing a comprehensive programme of incareer development for teachers under the guidance of the music inspectorate. The programme consists of individual school visits by members of a special curriculum support team and cluster meetings of teachers. The incareer development programme includes training in computers and music technology, choral techniques and Irish music. My Department is providing a comprehensive resource pack for all music teachers.
The new leaving certificate music syllabus is a continuation of the junior certificate syllabus which was examined for the first time in 1994. Both syllabi integrate the three core activities of performing, listening and composing.
Approximately 600 choirs and 70 orchestras and bands in second-level schools enter special annual Department examinations for choirs and orchestras.
My Department is reviewing the operation of the music grants scheme for secondary schools and I will be in a position to report on this by the end of the year.
