Vol. 481 No. 6

Written Answers - Traffic Congestion at Schools.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

156 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the contribution which the growing number of children being brought to school by car is making to traffic congestion in many urban areas; and if he will recommend to the Department of the Environment and Local Government that safe routes for cycling and walking to schools be given priority. [16782/97]

While I am aware of a general increase in the volume of traffic in many urban areas, my attention has not specifically been drawn to any increase in traffic congestion caused by the growing number of children being brought to school by car.

These matters are appropriate to the authorities responsible for traffic regulation and management, and I have no plans at present to make any recommendations to my colleague, the Minister for the Environment and Local Government, in this regard.
