Vol. 481 No. 6

Written Answers - Teachers' Pensions.

Liam Burke

Ceist:

31 Mr. L. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the discussions, if any, he has had with representatives of retired teachers regarding their entitlement to Programme for Competitiveness and Work increases; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16680/97]

I have had no discussions to date with representatives of retired teachers regarding their entitlement to Programme for Competitiveness and Work increases but I am aware from correspondence received of the concerns of retired teachers regarding their pension increases. This is recognised in the Government's joint programme, An Action Plan for the Millenium, which states that public service pensions will be protected. All retired teachers have received a 1 per cent special increase with effect from 1 April 1994. The issue of the application of any further special increases under the PCW is being considered and it is expected that an announcement on this matter will be made shortly.
