Vol. 481 No. 6

Written Answers - Job Sharing.

Louis J. Belton

Ceist:

57 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for Education and Science the measures, if any, which he plans to promote job-sharing in schools during the 1997-98 academic year; if he will allow job-sharing among neighbouring schools to expand the opportunities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16673/97]

As part of the strategy to raise awareness of the scheme of job-sharing at primary level, my Department has recently issued a comprehensive circular on the scheme to all primary schools. This circular provides a wide range of information on job-sharing to teachers and boards of management of primary schools and addresses all of the pertinent issues arising from the implementation of a scheme of job-sharing at primary school level.

The matter of allowing teachers to job-share in schools other than those in which they are employed in a permanent capacity has been considered by my Department. I am happy to inform the Deputy that there are a small number of teachers involved in this type of arrangement on a trial basis in the current school year.
