Vol. 481 No. 6

Written Answers - Third Level Education.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

61 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of persons in Dublin 12 and in Dublin 8 who have attended third level colleges or universities during 1996; and the way in which these numbers compare to the national average for college or university attendance. [16596/97]

The figures sought by the Deputy are not available. The latest available figures are those contained in Professor Patrick Clancy's report "Access to College: Patterns of Continuity and Change", which examines the pattern of participation in higher education in Ireland. The report is based on a national survey of all those enrolled as new entrants to full-time higher education in autumn 1992 and is the third such national survey undertaken by Professor Clancy.

Professor Clancy indicates that there were 70 new entrants from Dublin 8 and 192 from Dublin 12 giving admission rates of 15 per cent and 18 per cent respectively. The total of new entrants was 24,591 for the country as a whole giving an admission rate of 36 per cent.
