Vol. 481 No. 6

Written Answers - Primary School Curriculum.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

78 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give details of the discussions and resolutions, if any, he has had with the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands in relation to the promotion of education in and for the arts, within and outside the school setting; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16714/97]

Education in and for the arts will form a key element in the revised curriculum for primary schools which is being finalised at present by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment.

At second level, short courses on drama and dance are also being developed by the NCCA. In addition, arts education is being developed for the new leaving certificate applied programme. The arts syllabus at leaving certificate is also being revised.

In addition to other ongoing discussions consultation with the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands will form an important part of my consideration of these curricular proposals as and when I receive them.
