Vol. 481 No. 6

Written Answers - Coláiste na Coiribe, Galway.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

83 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science if he intends to grant permanent recognition to Coláiste na Coiribe, Galway. [16721/97]

Coláiste na Coiribe is an all-Irish post-primary school operating under the aegis of City of Galway Vocational Education Committee. The school opened with temporary recognition in 1992.

In January 1997, the committee applied for the permanent recognition of Cólaiste na Coiribe. This application was turned down because it was considered that the development of the Cólaiste, which was then in its 50th year of operation, was less than satisfactory in terms of pupil numbers.

A fresh application for permanent recognition is currently being considered in my Department in the light of the latest enrolments and the committee will be informed of the position as soon as possible.
