Vol. 482 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before dealing with the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 31 from Deputy McManus. I call on the Deputy to state the matter of which she has given notice to me.

I wish to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific matter of public interest, namely, the crisis in the courts following the decision of a number of District Court judges to dismiss hundreds of court cases yesterday following the recent High Court judgment regarding the validity of the appointment of District Court clerks and the need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to take immediate action to deal with the situation.

The position in the courts has seriously deteriorated in the last 24 hours.

The Deputy must not develop the point further. Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
