Vol. 482 No. 4

Written Answers - Defence Forces in Waterford.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

52 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Defence the level of personnel and activities of the permanent Defence Forces, the FCA, Civil Defence and Slua Muirí in the Waterford constituency; the plans, if any, he has for expansion in the Waterford constituency; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18225/97]

There are four enlisted personnel of the Permanent Defence Force serving in the Waterford area with An Forsa Cosanta Áitiúil and a further four enlisted personnel are serving with an Slua Muirí in that area. The members of the Permanent Defence Force are involved in the administration and training of the FCA and An Slua Muirí.

The current membership of Civil Defence in the Waterford area is approximately 600 active members. In 1996, Civil Defence in the Waterford area responded to over 60 community requests for assistance. The range of activities undertaken by the organisation is focused on the objectives as set out in the "Towards 2000" programme which is based on community help and support.
To support the Civil Defence organisation in the Waterford area, my Department provides where possible, the necessary vehicles, boats, kayaks, and working uniforms, specialised equipment and training so that the local organisation can meet its targets as set out in its local area development plan to the year 2000.
