264 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Finance if he will extend the car scrappage scheme until the end of January 1998 to facilitate consumers purchasing new cars under this scheme who wish to register their new cars in 1998. [18469/97]

As I announced on 8 October 1997, the car scrappage scheme will end on 31 December 1997. To qualify for the £1,000 VRT refund the new car must be registered, and the old car scrapped, by 31 December 1997.
