Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

425 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will provide a teacher for O'Carolan College, Nobber, County Meath for a person (details supplied) in County Meath who is currently attending the School for Deaf Children in Cabra, Dublin 7 at great expense and inconvenience to his parents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18478/97]

My Department's policy is to facilitate, as far as possible, the integration of pupils with special needs into ordinary second level schools. The enrolment of individual pupils is a matter in the first instance for the school authorities.

To date, my Department has not received an application from County Meath Vocational Education Committee seeking an additional teacher allocation to cater for this pupil's attendance at O'Carolan College. Should such an application be received, the matter will be considered and a decision conveyed to the committee as soon as possible.
