Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

477 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide school transport for 17 children to a school (details supplied) in County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19159/97]

In order to be eligible for free transport under the terms of the primary school transport scheme, children under ten years of age must live at least two miles from and be attending their nearest national school. The children to whom the Deputy refers reside between 1.1 and 1.9 miles from their nearest school, and are therefore ineligible for transport under the terms of the scheme. In the circumstances, I regret that it would not be open to my Department to establish or extend a service to facilitate the children in question.
