Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

217 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands whether her Department will launch a major scheme of renovations at the walled town of Kells, County Kilkenny; and, if not, when steps will be taken to protect this important piece of our national heritage. [19274/97]

Essential maintenance work has been undertaken at Kells Priory. A more comprehensive conservation scheme is being planned and will be undertaken when existing commitments under the EU Operational Programme for Tourism 1994-99 have been realised. Archaelogical excavations have also been carried out at Kells and it is hoped that the report on these will be published in 1998-99.
