Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

89 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the arrangements, if any, which are in hand for the upgrading of the Maynooth to Dublin railway line; when this work will commence; if the necessary arrangements have been made with Iarnród Éireann in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19486/97]

In my reply to Questions Nos. 90 and 91 of 9 July 1997 I explained how the suburban rail service between Dublin and Maynooth will benefit from EU assisted investment in the Dublin-Sligo railway line.

The specific requirements of the Dublin-Maynooth suburban rail service are being evaluated as part of the review of Dublin's suburban rail development needs which is being undertaken by CIE at present and which will provide the basis for discussions with the European Commission on investment priorities and funding aspects.

I understand that CIE hopes to finalise the review early in 1998.
