Vol. 483 No. 2

Written Answers. - Infant Nutrition.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

42 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the public advertising campaign of a company (details supplied) for infant feeding formulae as a substitute for breastfeeding is in breach of agreed policy and Irish law (details supplied); the action, if any, which will be taken to offset the effect of this campaign and to sanction the sponsors; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19806/97]

I wish to thank the Deputy for drawing this matter to my attention. My Department's primary concern is to ensure the provision of safe and adequate nutrition for infants, by the protection and promotion of breastfeeding and by ensuring the proper use of infant formulae and complementary foods when these are necessary. In the absence of more precise information from the Deputy it is not possible for me to look into this matter at present. However, should he wish to provide some further details I will be pleased to pursue it for him.
