Vol. 483 No. 2

Written Answers. - Paediatric Services.

Seán Barrett

Ceist:

75 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals, if any, he has to establish a single paediatric tertiary centre in Dublin; and the proposals, if any, he has for the development of paediatric medical vacancies. [19861/97]

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

118 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals, if any, he has to establish a single paediatric tertiary centre in Dublin; and the proposals, if any, he has for the development of paediatric medical services. [19959/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 75 and 118 together.

My Department has been aware for some time of the need for improved co-ordination and consultation in the delivery of paediatric services for the Dublin area. Following discussions with my Department, the chairmen of the three Dublin children's hospitals — Temple Street, Harcourt Street and Crumlin — have recently agreed to examine methods to allow the three institutions work together to provide improved care for children. In the course of this exercise, the hospitals propose to: (a) clarify current clinical links between the three hospitals; (b) identify each hospital's plans for development; (c) develop proposals for co-operation in provision of non-clinical services and in the training and education of staff. The Deputy may also wish to note that the hospitals have enlisted the services of Dr. Miriam Hederman-O'Brien to act as a facilitator and I would hope that the discussions can be completed early in the new year. When I have the benefit of the combined thinking of the hospitals on the matter, I will be happy to consider whatever proposals may emerge regarding the development of secondary and tertiary hospital services for children.
