Vol. 483 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Agenda 21.

John Gormley

Ceist:

259 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of local authorities which have local Agenda 21 in place. [20194/97]

Local authorities are currently engaged in the process of implementing Local Agenda 21 in their functional areas. In this regard, while my Department issued guidelines in 1995, the definition of appropriate initiatives is a matter for the authorities themselves. Sustainable Development — A Strategy for Ireland provides that all local authorities should complete a Local Agenda 21 by 1998. My Department does not hold details of the range of initiatives involved at this stage.
