Vol. 483 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Boundaries.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

263 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received a submission from representatives of an organisation called Clare Against Boundary Extension; if he will meet with this organisation before Christmas 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20206/97]

I am aware that Limerick Corporation is considering a proposal to extend the boundary of Limerick City to include parts of counties Limerick and Clare and I have received submissions from Clare Against Boundary Extension in this regard. The procedure for boundary extensions is set out in Part V of the Local Government Act, 1991, and associated regulations. However, as no proposal has yet been submitted to me, I have no role in the matter at present. If a proposal to extend the Limerick City boundary is submitted by Limerick Corporation, there is provision in the legislation to allow for the establishment of an independent boundary committee to consider all the issues involved. Given this legal framework, a meeting with any individual groups to discuss the possible merits or demerits of a proposal would not be appropriate. Clare Against Boundary Extension has previously been advised of this position.
