Vol. 483 No. 3

Written Answers. - Reconstruction Works.

Michael Finucane

Ceist:

321 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands when the works on Desmond Castle will be completed; if she will give details of the works which have been completed; those works still to be completed; the expenditure in this regard since the work commenced and for each year of reconstruction; and the plans, if any, she has for the usage of the castle following the reconstruction works which will give full recognition to its tourist potential. [20167/97]

I refer the Deputy to the replies given to Question No. 87 of 29 April 1997 and Question No. 35 of 8 May 1997. Works yet to be completed include repairs to the fire-place and the musicians gallery, electrical works, landscaping and the provision of windows, doors and furniture. It is also intended to convert the former cottage to a visitor reception and guides facility. It is expected that the works to the castle itself will be completed by early 1999. The amount expended in 1997 is £116,802, to date.

When completed, the castle will be open to the public during the tourist season with guided tours of the site. The site will be marketed along with other sites in the region.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

322 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if he will provide details of the proposal to establish a global whale sanctuary in Ireland; if his attention has been drawn to concerns regarding this proposal in terms of the global moratorium on commercial whaling; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20201/97]

I refer the Deputy to the comprehensive reply given by me to Question No. 3 of 23 October 1997.
