Vol. 483 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Ben Briscoe

Ceist:

340 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department will mount video cameras along the M50 in view of the vastly excessive speeds that a number of cars are travelling at; if so, when this will take place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20426/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the question of acquiring fixed cameras is being examined by them. However, a decision has not yet been made to purchase such cameras. The deployment of equipment is a matter, of course, for the Garda Commissioner.

I am also informed that the Garda are now in possession of the most up to date speed detection equipment. This equipment includes the GATSO mobile speed detection unit, radar, laser guns and in car video cameras. This equipment is used to detect speeding offences on the M50 and the Garda are satisfied that as a result there has been a reduction in average speeds on this stretch of motorway.

I have been assured by the Garda authorities that the M50 motorway will continue to receive a high level of Garda attention as part of the overall Garda strategy to deter motorists from breaking the speed limits.
