Vol. 483 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

137 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department will consider the appointment of a sergeant in Carbury, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20687/97]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the present strength of Carbury Garda station is one sergeant and one garda. However, I understand that following the promotion of the sergeant in Rathcoole, the sergeant allocated to Carbury station has been on a temporary transfer to Rathcoole Garda station since 20 June 1997. The Garda authorities have informed me that it is anticipated that the sergeant will return to Carbury Garda station in the near future.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that they are satisfied with the level of policing in the Carbury sub-district during the temporary transfer of the sergeant to Rathcoole Garda station. At present the area is policed by the garda allocated to Carbury Garda station and I understand that a vanette which is shared with the neighbouring station in Robertstown is available to him for the purpose of carrying out mobile patrols in the sub-district. These patrols are augmented by regular patrols carried out by mobile units from Newbridge Garda station and the district headquarters at Kildare Garda station. In addition, I understand from the Garda authorities that the sergeant in Robertstown gives assistance in Carbury as required.
