Ceist:

152 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of asylum applications decided by him since June 1997; the numbers granted refugee status and humanitarian leave to stay in this regard; the number whose applications were refused; and the number of these applications not sustained. [20899/97]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 151 and 152 together. The number of persons who have lodged applications for asylum in the State in the period 25 June to 21 November 1997 is 1,653. In the same period the following decisions were made:

Decision*

Number

Granted refugee status at first stage of determination.

50

Refused refugee status at first stage of determination but granted permission to remain on humanitarian grounds.

3

Refused refugee status at first stage of determination.

83

(*It should be noted that the decisions taken do not necessarily relate to applications made in the period.)
It is not clear what the Deputy means by applications not sustained. If the Deputy wishes to contact my office to clarify this I will make the necessary inquiries and communicate with the Deputy directly.
