43 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the policy, if any, she has on vernacular architecture and industrial heritage; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20618/97]
My policy in relation to the built heritage in general, which includes vernacular architecture and the industrial heritage, is that it be systematically inventorised and legally protected and that its conservation be promoted.
My colleague, Deputy Dempsey, Minister for the Environment and Local Government, and I, are currently finalising, and will shortly be bringing forward to Government for consideation, a package of legislative, administrative and financial proposals for the protection of the architectural heritage (which will include important elements of vernacular architecture and the industrial heritage), based on the recommendations in the report of the inter-departmental working group on strengthening the protection of the architectural heritage.
