Vol. 483 No. 5

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

48 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the current position in relation to works on the Eglington Canal and Parkavera Walk in Galway City; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20769/97]

Officials from my Department are currently drawing up plans for the Parkavera lock area in consultation with the architectural services of the Office of Public Works.

It is proposed to remove the existing concrete footbridge above the lock as it is felt that it is not in keeping with the general demeanour of the area; to renew the existing lock gates and provide safe access across them; to pave the area immediate to the lock chamber with cobblestones; and to floodlight the lock area from downstream.

The secretary of the Corrib Navigation Trustees has been informed verbally of the plans. The detailed drawings, which will be available early in the new year, will then be forwarded to the trustees for their consideration.
