Vol. 483 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Monuments Acts.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

69 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the plans, if any, she has to extend protection under the National Monuments Acts, 1930 to 1994 to monuments of architectural and historic importance. [20617/97]

The National Monuments Acts afford protection to monuments of architectural and historic importance.

As I stated in my reply to Questions Nos. 207 and 209 of 7 October 1997, my Department will be engaging in a review of the existing legislative provisions for the protection of the physical heritage and I will in due course be bringing forward appropriate proposals for the strengthening of the current legislative framework in order to remedy identified weaknesses.

With regard to the protection of the architectural heritage, my colleague, the Minister for the Environment and Local Government, Deputy Dempsey, and I are currently finalising, and will shortly be bringing forward for consideration by Government, a package of legislative, administrative and financial proposals, based on the recommendations in the report of the interdepartmental working group on strengthening the protection of the architectural heritage.
