307 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the £2.7 million cost referred to in his recent announcement of an upgrading of the Castlebar environs sewerage scheme, County Mayo, includes the entire scheme as submitted originally by a company (details supplied); the basis, if any, for the calculation of the £2.7 million costing in this regard; if his announcement and costing in this regard includes an upgrading of the existing treatment works; when work will commence on the Newtown section of this scheme; when the scheme will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I recently approved the preliminary report for the Castlebar environs sewerage scheme. The estimate of £2.7 million is for the entire scheme, including Newtown, and is based on the most recent estimate made by Mayo County Council. As a separate matter, the existing treatment plant was upgraded earlier this year at a cost of £260,000 approximately. I have also approved an advance stage of the scheme, from Marian Row to Linenhall Street, including the laying of a new sewer at Newtown, to go to construction in 1998.
