368 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of gardaí in the Garda District covering Ballyfermot and Clondalkin; the approximate population of this area; and the number of gardaí in the Garda drug unit based there. [21027/97]
I am informed by the Garda Authorities that as of 31 October, 1997, the current manpower strength (all ranks) of Ballyfermot District which covers Ballyfermot, Clondalkin and Ronanstown, is 184 members.
The population of Ballyfermot District, according to the 1991 census return was 102,920 (1996 census returns are not yet available).
I am advised by the Garda authorities that the manpower strength of Ballyfermot District Drug Unit is one sergeant and four gardaí.
369 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of special local Garda drug units in the Dublin area; the Garda stations where each unit is based in the area covered by each unit; and the number of gardaí in each unit in this regard. [21028/97]
I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are 14 dedicated local Garda drug units in the Dublin area with a total of 100 Garda officers assigned to these drug units. Of course, all members of the force regardless of any specialist assignment have a responsibility for the enforcement of all laws, including the various drug laws.
