Vol. 483 No. 6

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Ceist:

466 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a person (details supplied) in Dublin 24 was refused a higher education grant in view of the fact that other applicants in similar situations were successful in receiving a grant; if his Department will re-examine this particular case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21024/97]

Under the terms of the higher education grants scheme a candidate may not receive a grant for a second postgraduate course irrespective of whether or not a grant was paid for the first postgraduate course. I understand that the student in question holds a postgraduate Diploma in Social Policy and that she received a grant under the scheme in respect of this course. Accordingly, she is not eligible for further grant assistance in respect of the further postgraduate study she is currently undertaking.

I would like to point out to the Deputy that, other than in the case of students who did not pursue an undergraduate qualification in Social Science, the Diploma in Social Policy is not a necessary qualification for students who wish to pursue the Masters Degree in Social Science.
