Austin Currie

Ceist:

471 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science when all north Clondalkin primary schools, Dublin 22 will be provided with teacher counsellors; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21060/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 469 and 471 together.

The current pilot phase of the breaking the cycle pilot project is being closely monitored by my Department's inspectorate and the project will be evaluated by the education research centre. The question of any expansion of the pilot project to include additional schools will be considered in the light of the outcome of the evaluation.
A detailed evaluation of the teaching counsellor scheme is currently under way and I expect to receive a report on the outcome of the evaluation before the end of the current school year. The question of any further expansion of the scheme will be considered following completion of the evaluation.
I can assure the Deputy that the needs of schools in the north Clondalkin area will be fully considered in the context of any expansion of the above schemes which may be undertaken.
