Vol. 484 No. 2

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

John Perry

Ceist:

159 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) in County Sligo will be made permanent in her present employment in view of the fact that she is temporary for the past seven years; her position when two committees (details supplied) will be amalgamated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21801/97]

The allocation of clerical staff in the vocational education committee sector is made on a scheme wide basis and it is a matter for each Vocational Educational Committee to deploy sanctioned staff in the best manner possible to meet the needs of the committee and its schools. The Deputy will be aware that any case for an increase in staffing has to be approached in the context of Government policy on public service numbers generally.

Under the terms of the order amalgamating Town of Sligo and County Sligo Vocational Education Committees with effect from 1 January 1998, staff of the town vocational education committee will be assimilated into the county vocational education committee from that date. The question of permanency for the person in question will then be a matter for County Sligo Vocational Education Committee to address within the combined sanctioned staffing allocations at that time. In addition, a review by an independent consultant is at present under way into the functions and administrative staffing and organisational structures of the amalgamating vocational education committees. The outcome of this review will inform future staffing arrangements in the committees concerned.
