Vol. 484 No. 2

Written Answers. - Regional Technical Colleges.

Joe Higgins

Ceist:

28 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for Education and Science whether the site for the proposed regional technical college at Blanchardstown, Dublin 15 has been purchased; and if he will give a start-up date in this regard. [21603/97]

The original site for the proposed regional technical college, beside the Blanchardstown shopping centre, proved unsuitable following extensive investigation. My Department has since identified an alternative site comprising circa 45 acres at Blanchardstown for the college. The site, which is being developed by the IDA and Fingal County Council as part of a scientific/industrial and business park, is considered to be suitable. The relevant provisions have already been made in the Estimates to facilitate the acquisition of the site.

The acquisition documentation is at present being processed by the respective legal advisers with a view to having the final stages completed at an early date. A high level planning group was established in May 1997, under the aegis of the Higher Education Authority, to prepare and advise on a strategic plan for the new institution. The group is required to examine and report on issues such as the nature and level of course provision, student numbers, links to industry and administrative structures. The group's report will provide the basis for planning the new college.
