96 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education and Science the current allocation of resources to adult literacy in each vocational education committee area of the country; if each local authority in Dublin will be presented in the breakdown of this information; his views on whether these allocations are adequate to ensure literacy for all adults; and when this objective will be realised. The information requested by the Deputy regarding the 1997 allocation for the adult literacy and community education scheme (ALCES) is set out in tabular form. In Dublin grants were given only to City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee and County Dublin Vocational Education Committee. Particulars of allocations within local authority areas are not available.
In recognition of the need to address the issue of adult literacy I have obtained an increase in the provision for adult literacy of £2 million for 1998, which represents an increase of 75 per cent on the overall 1997 ALCES provision. I will continue to increase funding in this area as resources become avaiable.
