Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Laser Treatment.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

220 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health and Children if the matter of allowing laser treatment for short-sighted people on medical cards and on general health service entitlement is still under consideration; if he will estimate the likely annual cost to the Exchequer of this service; if he will introduce this on a gradual basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21851/97]

I understand that proposals for the introduction in the public hospital sector of laser treatment to correct short sightedness are being developed at present. I am aware, for example, that the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Dublin, is in the process of assessing the cost and service issues involved in introducing this service, relative to other service requirements. I will be happy to consider proposals from health agencies for the introduction of this treatment option on a phased basis within the public hospital sector.
