Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

222 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will give details of the regional specialities that are located at each of the three general hospitals in the Midland Health Board area; the number of beds associated with each speciality at each hospital; the total bed complement at each hospital; and the speciality, if any, he will locate at Mullingar General Hospital. [21876/97]

The Midland Health Board adopted a rationalisation plan in 1984 which included the establishment of orthopaedics, ENT and ophthalmic specialties in Tullamore General Hospital to cater for the region. To date the regional specialties in ENT and orthopaedics have been developed. There is currently a committee reviewing the pathology services in the region and a report is expected in early 1998. The regional director of cancer services is currently compiling a strategy for cancer services in the Midland Health Board region and his report is also awaited.

The following table shows the number of beds associated with each specialty, in each of the board's hospitals.
