Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Waste Baling Station.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

256 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has sanctioned additional funding for the provision of two further baling stations to service Dublin Corporation and council dump at Kill, County Kildare; if not, if he has received a request for funding approval; if the baling stations form part of the Dublin waste management strategy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21995/97]

Local authority borrowing has been sanctioned under the Local Government (No. 2) Act, 1960 in respect of expenditure on the waste baling station at Ballymount, County Dublin.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has applied for grant assistance under the Operational Programme for Environment Services, 1994-99, in respect of capital expenditure on various waste management facilities including a proposed integrated waste management centre at Ballyogan, County Dublin which would incorporate a waste baling facility. Grants to a value not exceeding £155,625 have been approved in respect of the provision of bring sites and receptacles for the collection of recyclable materials. Grant assistance has not been approved in respect of the proposed baling station. A waste management strategy for the Dublin area is at present under comprehensive review by the Dublin local authorities. The question of compliance of specific proposals with existing or future strategy is a matter for the appropriate local authority.
