Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

347 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science the current position regarding refurbishment and repair works at De La Salle national school, Glasnevin Road, Dublin 11 which was listed by the INTO in 1996 as having major repair problems and being unfit to teach in; if he will list the necessary works, specifying the current stage of each; the provision, if any, which is in the 1998 Estimates in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21832/97]

A new electrical installation costing almost £95,000 is virtually completed at De La Salle national school, Glasnevin Road, Dublin 11. The question of providing grant assistance towards the cost of replacement windows and upgrading the heating installation will be considered in the light of a future capital allocation.

Ceist:

348 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science the current position in relation to phase two of the refurbishment for a school (details supplied) in County Tipperary; if it will be approved for commencement in 1998; if it is listed as high priority work; the estimated cost of the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21833/97]

My Department's technical staff visited the school in question in October and carried out an inspection of the building. The school's consultants were requested to submit updated drawings to the Department for consideration. These drawings were submitted recently and are being examined by my Department's technical staff. A response will issue to the school authorities as soon as possible.

Every effort is being made to complete the planning of this project as quickly as possible in order to invite tenders as soon as funding becomes available. It is not possible at this stage to indicate if these works will be approved for commencement in 1998. However, the works are being treated as high priority. I regret I am not in a position to indicate the estimated cost of the works in question as this may adversely affect the tendering process.
