Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

Michael D'Arcy

Ceist:

363 Mr. D'Arcy asked the Minister for Education and Science when a remedial teacher will be appointed to three schools (details supplied) in County Wexford. [21926/97]

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

373 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education and Science if three schools (details supplied) in County Wexford will be collectively approved for the appointment of a remedial teacher; if his Department has received an application in this regard; and, if so, if his Department will consider it for approval at the earliest possible date. [22129/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 363 and 373 together.

In March 1997, the outgoing Minister for Education agreed staffing arrangements for primary schools for the next school year with the Irish National Teachers' Organisation. These agreed arrangements were based on the allocation of surplus posts available for redistribution from the demographic dividend for the 1997-98 school year and included the allocation of 51 remedial teacher posts to primary schools with effect from September 1997.

I am not in a position to allocate additional remedial teacher posts to primary schools. However, the needs of the schools to which Deputies refer will be considered in the context of any future allocation of remedial teacher posts which may be undertaken.
