Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - FÁS Jobs Initiative.

Ceist:

75 Mr. Hayes asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will confirm that the FÁS jobs initiative is not supporting projects which may cause job displacement in local markets by competing with existing ventures, including ventures supported by jobs initiative; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21963/97]

The job initiative is an initiative designed to provide full-time employment for persons over 35 years of age and who have been unemployed for more than five years. Job initiative projects are managed by a managing agent which is a not-for-profit organisation that recruits, employs and manages individuals funded through the job initiative. The programme enables voluntary-community organisations to carry out valuable work in local communities which would not otherwise be carried out. The job initiative may not support projects which may cause job displacement in local markets.
