Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Curragh Review Committee.

Joe Higgins

Ceist:

134 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for Defence if he has set up a review committee on the Curragh of Kildare; if so, the individuals who are on this committee; the purpose of this committee; the submissions, if any, the committee has sought from the public; if so, from whom; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22228/97]

In August 1997 the Secretary General of my Department and the Quartermaster-General of the Defence Forces established a board to make recommendations for the development and implementation of an environmental policy for the Curragh. The board consists of three officers of the Defence Forces and a member of the technical staff of the Department's property management branch. Bodies whom the board has consulted to date include: Kildare County Coucil, County Kildare Archaeological Society, Curragh Sheep Owners Association, Superintendent of the Phoenix Park, Ordnance Survey, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Curragh Race-course/Horse Trainers, Chief State Solicitor, the Environmental Protection Agency and various clubs having facilities on the Curragh.

It is expected that the board will furnish its report in early 1998.
