Written Answers - Adult Literacy Service.

Ceist:

120 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that in County Laois alone there are over 80 students availing of literacy tuition as a result of the allocation of funds for adult literacy and, as a consequence, it appears that the necessary funding may not allow schemes similar to that which is in operation in County Laois to continue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for Education and Science (Mr. Martin)

I am increasing the provision for adult literacy by £2 million for 1998. This is almost a doubling of the 1997 allocation. This provision should enable vocational education committees in all counties to enhance their literacy services.

I will continue to increase funding in this area as resources become available.
