Vol. 484 No. 4

Written Answers - Garda Investigations.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

107 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of complaints which have been received by the Garda pursuant to the Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act, 1989 for breaches of the Act; the number of complaints which have been investigated; and the number of prosecutions which have been initiated under the Act. [22426/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that since the Incitement to Hatred Act, 1989 became law in November of that year, the Garda have received a total of 11 complaints.

In six cases, the identity of the culprit could not be ascertained. In one case, no evidence was found to substantiate the allegations. In three cases, files were forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for directions; he directed that no charges be preferred. The remaining case is currently under investigation.
