Vol. 485 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

112 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education and Science if children who are diagnosed as dyslexic will be granted special arrangements when sitting for the junior and leaving certificate; and his views on whether these children, without special examination arrangements, would not have a fair and equitable opportunity in these exams. [22548/97]

My Department makes special arrangements at the junior and leaving certificate examinations for candidates who are diagnosed as dyslexic. The special arrangements are intended to remove, as far as possible, the impact of the disability on the candidates' performance and to ensure that, whilst giving a candidate every opportunity to demonstrate his or her level of attainment, the special arrangements will not give the candidate an unfair advantage over other candidates.
