Vol. 485 No. 4

Written Answers. - Producer Groups.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

49 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number of producer groups that have been developed with State assistance in the horticultural sector; the name and produce in each case; the level of success in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23318/97]

Six producer groups were granted official recognition under Council Regulation (EEC) 1035/72. Aid to encourage their formation and to facilitate their administration was provided for the first five years of operation at rates of 5 per cent, 5 per cent, 4 per cent, 3 per cent and 2 per cent respectively of the value of production marketed. Recognised producer groups have also taken advantage of community withdrawal compensation for apples, tomatoes and cauliflowers.

Four of the groups have been granted recognition for fruit and vetetables, one for vegetables only and one for soft fruit. Five of the groups continue to provide services for their members. The organisation of groups in the horticultural sector is assisted by Teagasc and An Bórd Glas irrespective of whether they apply for formal recognition under EU Regulation.
